Description
India has been enjoying its rapid economic development. In the era of constant growth, however, there are people who are cut off from the condition and left behind the times. These untouchables have been the target of oppression and discrimination under the caste system, coming to identify themselves as Dalit, meaning "the oppressed". Although the caste system is now banned by the Indian constitution, it is still deeply rooted in people's lives, imposing hardships on Dalit. Upon standing face to face with those at the lower levels of society, the photographer could not help pondering on their cruel fate. Through sincere documentation of Dalit people, Koda attempts to explore the reality that will never be divorced from discrimination.
